Book akala5/26/2023 In this well-researched book, Akala explores how the exceptional achievements of black people do not provide evidence that the perceived obstacles of poverty and race can be overcome by all. He shows how being in the wrong place at the wrong time is the most important factor determining the outcome for black Britons. In this book he shows what it was like to grow up in Camden as a poor, mixed raced kid in the 1980s. He is an outspoken critic on (the growing) inequality in the UK, focusing on class and race. If you want to explore the idea of meritocracy and engage with a provocative discussion on the success of the British Empire, you will certainly discover some novel insights from Akala’s debut book Natives.Īkala is a well-known figure in the UK, as hip-pop artist, social entrepreneur and public speaker.

In the Blood by Suzan-Lori Parks5/26/2023 Mean words are Parks’ stock in trade in this piercing study of a society that exploits its underclass at every turn. “We ain’t got our leg up just yet,” she says early on, “so we gotta live with mean words.”Īlso Read: 'F-ing A' Theater Review: Christine Lahti Humanizes Suzan-Lori Parks' Dystopia The word “slut” is tossed in her direction quite a bit and yet it doesn’t slow her down. Several years before she won the Pulitzer Prize for “Topdog/Underdog,” Suzan-Lori Parks wrote a pair of plays seeking to riff on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlett Letter.” The more successful is “In the Blood,” which gets a spirited and stirring revival at Off-Broadway’s Signature Theatre complex - where its Brechtian counterpart, “F-ing A,” is playing just across the hall.įor “In the Blood,” Parks reimagines Hester Prynne as an inner-city woman struggling to make ends meet as she raises her five children, each the product of a different, long-gone father.Īs played by the remarkable Saycon Sengbloh (“Scandal,” “Eclipsed”), this Hester is a “welfare queen” striver who recognizes her own role in her predicament (“My life’s my own fault, I know that”) but maintains a compelling optimism despite the many odds stacked against her - from illiteracy to economic deprivation to societal rejection in many forms. In 2001, Disney released a film based on his first memoir called The Other Side of Heaven. He wrote a memoir about his missionary experience titled In the Eye of the Storm and a sequel about his experiences as a mission president titled Fire of Faith. Hush hush book 15/26/2023 Plot:īased on the NY Times bestseller that went on to have three more sequels in the saga, 'Hush, Hush,' will feature Liberato as Nora, the young protagonist of the story. Kellie Cyrus - known for her work in supernatural TV shows - is onboard to direct the film, based on a script from Peter Hutchings. Very 'Twilight,' we agree, but when we talk supernatural in 'Hush, Hush,' instead of vampires and werewolves, we have a whole new world of fallen angels and demons alike. Thus transpires a tale of romance and the supernatural which starts with the two being seated next to each other in biology class. The original book that the film will be based on arrived a decade ago in 2009 and revolves around a young teen (Liana Liberato) who falls for a mysterious high-school hottie (Wolfgang Novogratz). Tj klune how to be a normal person5/26/2023 The prices of the books are set they way they are because it's the only way I'll see a meaningful profit. Hey! All the books I have listed are self-published, given that I had to take the rights back from the former publisher who unfortunately mismanaged the royalties, leaving hundreds of us without payment for our hard work. I am taking it one day at a time, so I won't make any promises, but I can say that I've at least started! We'll see how it goes. So much so that last week, I started writing Verania book five! I'm a little rusty, but over the last week, I've written about 25K words of Justin's story. That being said, I have the backing of a great new publisher in Tor, and I'm so excited about what the future will bring. It's hard to want to write when a publisher has screwed you over so bad. What people need to understand (and this isn't me admonishing you-always ask questions, it's how you'll know!) is how creatively stifling all of this has been. I have received the rights back to my books and republished them, but I'm still owed tens of thousands of dollars from Dreamspinner, and there is no relief in sight. Hundreds of authors, editors, cover artists, translators are still owed an untold amount of money. No, the problems have not been straightened out. |
